'Sketches’ bk.1 and 2

Now available are the first two books, in what is envisaged will become an extensive series entitled Sketches’ – quality, modern but light piano music for players of AB Gd.3 and above. Published by Taigh na Teud – one of Scotland’s leading music publishers, the books are beautifully presented; each volume includes a CD recording of the pieces.

‘Sketches’ bk. 1 and 2 are collections of delightful short piano pieces, expertly crafted by teacher and composer Stephen J. Wood. Originally written for his students, they cover a wide variety of styles ranging from jazz to more traditional forms, reflecting the composer’s eclectic taste in music.

Each piece, although completely different in character, contains the composer’s tasteful and inventive use of harmony coupled with inspired melody writing. Whilst all the pieces remain generally light, they cover many techniques essential for today’s pianists. Each book contains a selection of pieces ranging from the moderately easy to the slightly more challenging. They are equally suited to learn for pleasure or for use as examination or assessment pieces, and would be a perfect addition to any recital or festival programme. The books also contain teachers’ notes to stimulate discussion with students.

This collection of pieces is ideal for the discerning teacher looking for new, modern and fresh repertoire, and will be a valuable addition to any music student’s collection.

Scottish Piano bk. 1 and 2.

A couple of years ago, Stephen J. Wood received a commission from Taigh na Teud Music Publishers, to arrange and record a selection of traditional Scottish melodies in a contemporary style for piano. Stephen's aim, when embarking on this project, was to select a wide range of tunes that were both popular and enduring, and which best represented the rich and diverse tradition that is ever-present in Scottish musical culture.

Although retaining their strong Gaelic flavour, influences from other traditions are present in the arrangements – the use of modern harmony reflecting Stephen’s love of jazz, together with a variety of techniques and styles sought by today’s traditional, popular and classical players. Some of the arrangements are fairly radical, others not so. In all instances, the beauty and integrity of the music in its original form have been maintained.

These settings range from richly harmonised airs such as Lord Lovat’s Lament and Farewell to Fuinary, to the slightly tongue-in-cheek treatment of The Drunken Piper. Even the less radically altered arrangements of Strathspeys, Marches and Jigs are still given a contemporary feel that people will find both attractive and challenging to play.

Equally suited to learning for pleasure or for use as examination or assessment pieces, these volumes are ideal for those looking for arrangements that could be used for ceilidhs, SQA exams, Mods, concerts etc., and would be a perfect addition to any music programme. This is piano music in the Scottish idiom but with a difference! Click on ‘Sound Clips’ link below to listen to excerpts from each of the pieces

The commission culminated in two volumes of arrangements entitled Scottish Piano. Each book includes a CD recording of the pieces, and is now widely available.
